70,000 Pound Donation Will Help Feed the Hungry this Holiday
Milwaukee, Wis. – The holidays will be brighter for hungry families in eastern Wisconsin this season thanks to a very generous donation from Balistreri Owned and Operated Sendik’s Food Markets. As a result of a three month partnership, Sendik’s is donating 70,000 pounds of food and more than $19,000 to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
Since August, Sendik’s and their customers have collected food and money to help feed the hungry in eastern Wisconsin through the following in-store promotions:
- Sendik’s Real Food Magazine: 100% of proceeds from sale benefitted Feeding America.
- Backpack Buddies: Proceeds from Backpack Buddies provided a backpack filled with school supplies for needy children in the Milwaukee area.
- Mac & Cheese Promotion: For every box of macaroni and cheese sold, Sendik’s donated one box to Feeding America.
- Sendik’s Food Drive: Customers purchased a $10, $20 or $50 bag of groceries to help feed hungry families.
- Keep the Change for Feeding America: Customers had the opportunity to round up their receipt total to the nearest dollar for Feeding America.
Since 2008, Sendik’s has donated more than 504,000 meals to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin through these efforts.
“It has been a privilege partnering with Feeding America. Their dedication to those in Wisconsin who struggle to provide food for their families made it easy to give with enthusiasm. We know that the hard work of our Sendik’s team and the generosity of our customers will make a difference right here within our own community,” said Margaret Harris of Sendik’s Food Markets.
The demand for food from Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin has increased 30% over the last two years. Unemployment and home foreclosures have forced many families to rely on their local food pantry for food. “The support from Sendik’s provides much needed food assistance for families experiencing hardships as a result of the struggling economy. This donation will help us meet the increased need for emergency food relief especially during the holiday season,” said Bonnie Bellehumeur, president of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
330,000 people in Wisconsin rely on food supplied by Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, formerly named America’s Second Harvest of Wisconsin. The food bank is the largest, private, non-profit distributor of food in the state. Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin distributes nearly 14 million pounds of food annually to 1,100 food pantries, meal programs and shelters throughout the state.
