February 24, 2010

For your information:

Greg Devorkin - 262-240-0249 - 414-839-7065

Devo Properties and the City of New Berlin announced today that Sendik’s Food Market will bring its high quality food offerings to the community. Sendik’s will remodel and occupy a 44,000-square-feet store at the New Berlin Plaza at 3600 South Moorland Road. Sendik’s is expected to open on November 1, 2010, just in time for the busy Holiday shopping season. The store is part of the shopping center that was previously occupied by Lang and Kohl’s Food Store. The mall will be renamed Sendik’s New Berlin Plaza.

New Berlin Enterprises, LLC, an investment group led by Devo Properties, purchased the New Berlin Plaza shopping center last week. The New Berlin Plaza is 82,000 square feet. Current tenants include Goodwill Industries and Shorewest Realtors. New Berlin Enterprises also purchased three outlots currently leased to Taco Bell, Burger King and PNC Financial, and three residential properties along West Coffee Road. These properties are adjacent to the existing shopping center. The homes on those residential properties will be demolished to make room for an expansion of the shopping center.

Devo Properties principal Greg Devorkin said construction will begin immediately on a 17,000 square foot expansion at the north end of the shopping center. Upon completion, Goodwill Industries will move into the new expansion space and Sendik’s will take over the current Goodwill space. Goodwill is expected to move into the new space on September 1, 2010. “The expansion and renovation of the New Berlin Plaza is an ideal opportunity for Goodwill, especially with a high-quality grocer like Sendik’s anchoring the development. Not only will we gain approximately 2,000-square-feet of store space, but also an improved entrance and drive-through drop-off, which will make shopping and donating more convenient for our community,” said Goodwill vice president, Retail Services, Vicki Holschuh.

Sendik’s is owned by brothers Nick, Patrick and Ted Balistreri, and sister, Margaret Harris. They are the fourth generation to carry on the Sendik’s tradition. Sendik’s roots date back to 1926 when the first store opened in the Metro Milwaukee area. Ted said the family is proud to add the New Berlin community to its tradition of superior fresh produce, high quality seafood, meat, bakery, deli, grocery, dairy, wine, spirits, cheese and flowers. In addition, they offer a variety of small gift items in their flower department.

“We look forward to offering a high quality shopping experience to the community. Our regular customers know we listen to them and carry items that they ask for. So the residents of New Berlin should get ready for a great shopping experience,” said Ted. He noted that the new store opening will result in 70 full time and 80 part time employment positions, the majority expected to be filled from New Berlin and the immediate area. The family’s other stores are in Whitefish Bay, Wauwatosa, Mequon, Grafton, Elm Grove, Franklin, Germantown and Greenfield.

New Berlin Director of Community Development Gregory Kessler said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have been able to work with Sendik’s to help bring them to the New Berlin market. They will be an outstanding addition to our City Center. It is wonderful to see a local business expand here with such a long history and an impressive reputation for quality. It signifies that, in these difficult economic times, New Berlin is a great place to do business.”

New Berlin Mayor Jack F. Chiovatero said, “For four generations, Sendik’s has been the place to go for quality food products and the finest of produce. Their long history has been built on ultimate customer satisfaction and superior service. We are delighted to welcome this upscale retailer to our fine community. I am pleased that Sendik’s has recognized the potential and opportunity that New Berlin has to offer our business community. This establishment will be a wonderful addition to our City Center – adding both an upscale grocery experience for our residents, as well as local job opportunities. We welcome Sendik’s with enthusiasm and open arms. We couldn’t be happier.”

WHY: Because it’s really fun to give stuff away and to support a great cause!

Milwaukee, WI – Over the past 10 weeks Balistreri Sendik’s Food Markets have partnered with After Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD), an organization founded by local news personality Melodie Wilson Oldenburg, to promote breast cancer awareness and try to raise funds for this great charitable organization. The promotion will come to an end this Friday when one lucky Sendik’s customer will win a new car! Join us Friday, April 17th, 2009 at Noon at Sendik’s in Franklin to see the results of our two and a half months of teamwork and pick the winner of the brand new Chevy Malibu Hybrid.

“We are humbled by the incredible support our customers have given to this grass roots, local charity, ABCD” said Nick Balistreri of Sendik’s. “The event, celebrating the achievement of over $70,000 raised will culminate by having former Green Bay Packer LeRoy Butler and Franklin Mayor Tom Taylor draw the name of the grand prize winner of the new car. I think it will be a great finale to this fantastic partnership and a great last push to help a wonderful organization in ABCD,” Balistreri added. LeRoy Butler will also be signing autographs and selling merchandise to benefit the LeRoy Butler Foundation for Breast Cancer. Balistreri also noted that Palermo’s Pizza and Coca Cola will be on hand to provide refreshments for the event.

Kathy Ehley, President of ABCD’s Board of Directors said, “Breast cancer doesn’t care that the economy is challenging now. Our free services are more important than ever. We are extremely grateful for Sendik’s financial generosity.” She added, “But Sendik’s did more than raise funds. Sendik’s welcomed our volunteers into their eight metro-Milwaukee stores to share information about ABCD with customers. And Sendik’s employees have become enthusiastic advocates for the cause. This is has been real community teamwork in action.”

Since February, Sendik’s and their customers have collected money to benefit ABCD. Here are a few highlights from the program:

Sendik’s Real Food Magazine: 100% of proceeds from the sale of the magazine benefitted ABCD.

Hearts for ABCD: For 2 weeks Sendik’s sold foil wrapped chocolate hearts for $1 each with all proceeds benefitting ABCD.

The Power of One-To-One: During this 2 week period if customers purchased any participating ice cream products Sendik’s contributed $1 of the sale to ABCD.

Support ABCD… Win A Car: Sendik’s purchased and donated a new Chevy Malibu Hybrid and then, over a 7 week period customers received entry slips to win the car by donating $2 to ABCD. For more information on this event go to http://www.sendiksmarket.com/web/chevrolet-malibu-hybrid-giveaway.

Thru Sendik’s Real Food Magazine charity partnership program Balistreri Sendik’s also contributed $59,000 to the MACC Fund in January and in November a donation valued at over $100,000 to Wisconsin’s Second Harvest.

###

ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis was founded by a group of women who realized that having breast cancer is about much more than biopsies, surgery and chemotherapy. Most of ABCD’s founders are breast cancer survivors themselves who discovered that the most valuable information and support came from others in similar life circumstances with similar experiences with the disease. But not everyone diagnosed with breast cancer knows where to find that kind of help. That’s where ABCD comes in.

ABCD’s mission is to provide free, personalized information and one-to-one support to people in eastern Wisconsin who are affected by breast cancer. While science searches for a cure, ABCD complements the work of health care providers by serving as a reliable, accessible and highly personalized resource for breast cancer patients and their loved ones.

ABCD trains volunteers to be Mentors and then matches them with people diagnosed with breast cancer and their families and loved ones. Matches are made on the basis of demographic and clinical data supplied by Mentors and participants. A Mentor keeps in touch with the participant by phone throughout the treatment process, providing information on local and national resources, and perhaps most important, the support of someone who’s “been there.” ABCD also operates the Breast Cancer Helpline, the only such telephone helpline in Eastern Wisconsin. To learn more about ABCD, log onto www.abcdmentor.org.

Sendik’s Food Market is one of the few sources of quality old fashioned bakers cheese. As difficult as it is to find bakers cheese, it’s even harder to find recipes. Many of these old family
recipes are treasured and passed down from one generation to the next.

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting with Mary Wilhelm at Germantown. She was shopping for bakers cheese to make her family’s favorite torte. She not only shared the recipe with me, but also the story of the recipe. Mary also graciously agreed to allow me to tell you the story and print the recipe.

Mary’s Grandmother, Eleanor Wilhelm, as a young wife, was expecting company and decided to make this “Refrigerator Torte,” a recipe that the family believes she found in a magazine. Mary’s father, Jerry, was 7 years old the first time Eleanor made
this and he loved it. In fact, it became his favorite.

Jerry always asked for the torte on his birthday. When he became an adult, his bride, Charlotte, learned how to make the torte.

Charlotte continued the tradition of making the torte for Jerry’s birthday every year until the year of his passing at age 72 years old.

Mary told me that her Mom always makes a “triple” batch because everyone knew that there would be torte for Jerry’s birthday and friends would stop by to get their piece of the treasured treat. Charlotte and Jerry owned “Jerry’s Beer and Liquor” in West Allis, and many of their customers became dear friends.

Today, Jerry’s family and friends continue to celebrate his birthday on July 25th with a triple batch of this Refrigerator Torte when they all get together.

A treasured gift was created within this family thru a recipe, a
simple torte that had been printed in a magazine many decades
ago. I am sure that the author never imagined how this recipe would impact a family. Isn’t that what is so amazing about the art of cooking? Food brings families together and creates traditions and memories that last generations. In today’s hectic world, it’s such a gift that we can use cooking and food as the glue that holds our families’ spirits and minds together, providing treasured memories for future generations.

WILHELM FAMILY REFRIGERATOR TORTE

1 sm pkg Lemon Jell-O (The original recipe called for pineapple Jell-O, Jell-O brand has a pineapple flavor that will be available at Sendik’s )
1 sm can crushed pineapple– drained, reserving juice in measuring cup. Add enough water to equal 1cup of liquid.
1/2 cup milk; use whole or 2%
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 egg yolks
1 lb Sendik’s Bakers Cheese
2 egg whites
1/2 pint whipping cream

Crust:

2 cup gram cracker crumbs
1/2 cup to 1/4 cup Sugar (original recipe used 1/2 cup)
1/3 cup melted butter (Charlotte says “No substitutes. Must use butter!”)
Mix together gram cracker crumbs and sugar; add melted butter. Mix well.
Place in either a spring form pan or a 9×13 pan. Reserve some of the crust crumbs for the top.
On the stove top bring the pineapple and water mixture to a boil. Add Jell-O and stir until all dissolved. Cool
In a second pot on stove top; Bring milk, sugar, salt and beaten egg yolks, stirring constantly until thick. Remove from stove and allow to cool.
When both the Jell-O mixture and the milk mixture are cool. Add the milk mixture to the Jell-O mixture beating with electric mixer. Add Sendik’s Bakers
Cheese and continue beating until smooth. In a separate bowl beat egg whites until very stiff. Gently fold beaten whites into the Sendik’s Bakers
Cheese mixture using a hand whisk, be very careful not to over mix and break down the egg whites.
Now in another chilled mixing bowl using chilled beaters; beat the whipping cream until stiff. Now fold this in to Sendik’s Bakers Cheese mixture again
being very careful not to over mix, causing the whipping cream or egg whites to break down.
Now assembly: Spread crushed pineapple evenly in pan on top of gram cracker crust. Pour Sendik’s Bakers
Cheese mixture onto of the pineapple, spread evenly. Sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Refrigerate to set overnight.
