Enjoy Sendik’s All Week & A Great Mango Smoothie

Print This Post |

This week, I’m discussing my habits with you here –  Tuesday it was my pizza issue.  Today, it’s mangoes.  The DamFam fights over mangoes the same way we do about greasy cartons of Chinese food leftovers.  I guess there are worse things to fight about.  So when mangoes go on sale, like they are this week, I stock up.  I bring them home and put my handy little mango pitter to work (do you have one?  This is what it looks like).  I pit them, then slice the halves lengthwise, lop off the peels, then cut the strips into cubes.  I usually put some in a fruit salad right way and stash the rest in the freezer for smoothies.  Here’s one of our favorites. Barbecued Chicken Pizza & Foolproof Poached Chicken Breasts

Fladbread Pizza

I’m still on my mini pizza kick.  What better little obsession is there to have, really?  I guess there’s always fitness.  And diligent flossing.  Or never skipping a healthy breakfast.   All good and useful routines to develop and embrace, and each one is less expensive than the hardcore proclivities like designer shoe shopping, fancy French truffles or Beluga caviar.  Pizza and fitness.  They go hand in hand.  Read the rest of this entry »

Hey, guess what … it’s Thursday and it’s still raining.  I’m listening to my poor sump pump working away as we speak.  Does anyone else stress out over their sump pump like I do when it rains for days on end?  If you’ve ever had water in your basement you know what I’m talking about.  I literally lose sleep over something that’s completely beyond my control.  It reminds me of one of my dad’s favorite quotes: “Things without all remedy should be without regard” (Lady MacBeth, Act 3, Scene 2) … I can’t end rampant precipitation so I suppose I’ll play like Lady Macbeth and move on. Turkey Wraps with Chipotle Mayonnaise

Turkey Wraps

I’m always amazed by the awesome recipes I stumble upon when I take time to weed through my disheveled, disorganized, disaster of a filing system I’ve got going on.   Today’s wraps are a great example of a long forgotten old favorite, and I came across the recipe at the perfect time.  We had a chaotic night where the whole DamFam was going to be rushing off to various events (meetings, practices, yadda yadda yadda) and dinner was eaten in shifts.  I set up a little wrap-building assembly line in the morning and made wraps to everyone’s specifications (service with a smile, don’tcha know).  I rolled them in sheets of parchment, labeled them with black crayon ala’ Jimmy Johns, and stashed them in the fridge for later consumption.  I even made two extra for cold lunches the following day — how smart was that?  Read the rest of this entry »

We’ve just returned from our spring break vacation – maybe you’ve been away, too.   We weren’t on the sort of trip where one passes time by reclining in a poolside lounger whilst sipping fruity frozen umbrella drinks through bendy straws.  No sir.  Rather, the DamFam took the sort of trip which required one to log approximately five miles a day on one’s most sensible shoes.  Good exercise to be sure, but the diet still managed to find its way off the rails for the duration of the trip.  Despite all of the walking, I could use a post-vacation salad.  Here are three that I love.

Spicy Quinoa, Cucumber & Tomato Salad

Spicy Quinoa Cucumber Tomato Salad

As we were going through our usual warm up at boot camp a few weeks ago, the conversation turned to (what else?) — food.  Healthy food, naturally.  I took the opportunity to throw myself aggressively into the warm up and keep my big mouth shut, as I don’t typically have anything constructive to contribute to these conversations. They tend to revolve around avoiding the very consumables that I happen to enjoy.  I was concentrating on my form and was in my own little world of perfect side lunges when someone said, “Let’s ask the food blogger!  Leah, do you happen to know a good recipe for homemade quinoa tortillas?” (A good recipe, like I have more than one up my sleeve).  Well.  I nearly laughed out loud and thought, I am being punked right here in the middle of Monday morning boot camp.  I resisted a snappy reply, and instead, put on my saddest face and said only “sorry, I sure don’t.”  Read the rest of this entry »

Breakfast Bruschetta

Breakfast Bruschetta

I thought I’d put a breakfast “appetizer” idea out there for you all this week.  Something healthy-ish to nosh on whilst you make your way through your marshmallow peep and jelly bean stash on Sunday morning -  a little nibble while you wait for the egg casserole to finish baking.  This breakfast bruschetta is a pretty little prelude to Easter Sunday brunch.  Hope the Bunny is good to everyone.  “Hoppy” Easter.  : )

It’s the first day of spring as I’m writing to you now, and even though it’s still brisk and blustery out there, I thought maybe it was appropriate to start thinking about lighter foods for warmer months.  Eventually temperatures will rise, and so will hemlines, and no one wants to walk around looking like all they did was put back beef stew and mashed potatoes all winter long.  Besides, I’m on a sugar bender from celebrating National Chocolate Week for the past four days.  Let’s talk lighter eating.

Seven Layer Bars

So, you probably won’t even believe that it’s come around again so quickly, but holy smokes, everyone — it’s National Chocolate Week.  Who knew?  This crazy celebration catches me off guard every gosh darned year.  This morning I found myself under the gun to whip up something chocolate-y before the hullabaloo came and went without being paid its proper respects.  Seven Layer Bars are cooling for the cakestand as we speak.
